Multiple Award Eligiblity

A Stanford Graduate Fellowship may be awarded singly or as a combination award, in conjunction with a nationally competitive fellowship or with another award (e.g. NSF, NDSEG and others). Several agencies have agreed to a dual fellow designation for students in receipt of an outside fellowship and the SGF.

Receipt of an outside award and a SGF typically extends the length of a Fellow's guaranteed support, up to a maximum of five years.

NSF-SGF dual award example Year 1, 2, 3 NSF supplemented to SGF levels
Year 4, 5 Full SGF support

Students with a combination award are responsible for compliance with the policies of both awards.

For NSF-SGF Fellows

NSF-SGF is configured with three successive years of NSF-SGF after the NSF is awarded (unless it would exceed the fifth year of graduate studies, in which case no SGF supplement is provided).  For a 2013-14 NSF-SGF year, the SGF supplement to the NSF for tuition and stipend may total more than $29,120 (ENG > $31,440).

Please note:  If NSF stipend is forfeited, the SGF supplement is forfeited.  In such cases, support for quarters on forfeit status will need to be provided by other sources.  All SGF support must be used in the first five years of graduate studies.
